What a Retaining Wall Costs in Connecticut
Updated August 2026 · Connecticut pricing and practice
Walls are the hardscape project people underestimate most, because two-thirds of a good wall is invisible: the base, the backfill, and the drainage behind it.
The 2026 numbers, per face square foot
Walls are priced by face feet — length × exposed height.
| What you're buying | Typical CT range | 40 ft × 3 ft example (120 ff) |
|---|---|---|
| Materials — block, cap, base gravel, drainage stone, pipe, fabric, adhesive | $15 – $30 / face ft | $1,800 – $3,600 |
| Installed — under 4 ft, decent access | $40 – $60 / face ft | $4,800 – $7,200 |
| Installed — tall, engineered, tight access, or heavy demo | $60 – $90+ / face ft | $7,200 – $10,800+ |
The 4-foot line
In most Connecticut towns, a wall over 4 feet of exposed height needs a permit and a stamped engineering design — and if the wall holds back a slope or a driveway, some towns apply that logic even lower. Engineering typically adds design fees plus geogrid reinforcement layers in the backfill. This isn't red tape for its own sake: a 5-foot wall holding saturated CT soil in spring is carrying real load, and failed walls fail expensively.
Where wall money actually goes
- The buried course and base. A compacted gravel footing 6+ inches deep, with the first course buried — on a 3-foot wall you're building roughly 3.5 feet of wall to show 3.
- Drainage stone and pipe. Clean stone and perforated pipe behind the wall, wrapped in fabric. Water pressure, not soil, is what pushes walls over — the drainage is the wall.
- Corners and curves. Every corner adds cuts and often special blocks; the calculator asks for your corner count because it genuinely changes the order.
- Getting material behind the house. Wall block is brutally heavy — a modest wall is several pallets plus tons of stone. If the machine can't reach, labor hours climb fast.
Walls over 4 feet: budget for the engineer before you budget for the block, and talk to your building department early. The calculator flags this automatically when your height crosses the line.
