Pavers vs. Poured Concrete in Connecticut
Updated August 2026 · Connecticut pricing and practice
This is the most common fork in the road, and both answers are legitimate. Here's the comparison with the salesmanship removed.
Up-front cost, Connecticut 2026
| Surface | Installed range | 400 sq ft example |
|---|---|---|
| Poured concrete, broom finish | $12 – $20 / sq ft | $4,800 – $8,000 |
| Stamped / decorative concrete | $18 – $28 / sq ft | $7,200 – $11,200 |
| Concrete pavers, installed | $25 – $45 / sq ft | $10,000 – $18,000 |
Concrete wins the opening bid, clearly. The rest of the story is about what happens after year one.
How each one survives a Connecticut winter
- Concrete is rigid. Freeze-thaw movement has nowhere to go, so slabs crack — the control joints just choose the location. Once a slab cracks or a corner settles, the fix is cosmetic patching or cutting out and re-pouring a section that will never quite match.
- Pavers are a flexible system. The surface is hundreds of small units on a compacted base, so seasonal movement is distributed. If a spot settles, you lift those pavers, re-grade the bedding, and set the same pavers back. The repair is invisible and costs an afternoon.
- Salt and plowing. Quality concrete pavers handle de-icing salt better than most poured finishes, which can spall (flake) when salted young. Either surface plows fine when it's flat.
The honest decision guide
- Pick poured concrete when budget is the constraint, the area is utility (shed pads, basketball keys, side walk-strips), and you accept that cracks are a when, not an if.
- Pick pavers when the space is living space — patio, pool deck, front entry — where appearance, repairability, and resale presentation earn back the up-front gap.
- Don't pick stamped concrete for the paver look on a budget without seeing an 8-year-old example first. When it cracks, it cracks through the pattern, and color-matched repairs are genuinely hard.
